London-based clockmaker John Thompson created a masterpiece with this mahogany automaton longcase clock. The intricate automata elements—the rocking couple on a see-saw, the windmill in motion, and the miller emerging from his house—demonstrate not only the artistic but also the engineering sophistication of the era. These animated features were crafted to entertain and astonish viewers, combining artistry with mechanical ingenuity.
The silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, along with the subsidiary seconds dial and nameplate, showcase meticulous attention to detail. The use of flame-veneered mahogany and brass accents, such as the stop-fluted columns and finials, speaks to the clock’s luxurious craftsmanship.
The eight-day movement with rack striking on a bell ensures its functionality matches its aesthetic appeal. The knopped pillars are characteristic of fine clockmaking from the period, emphasizing durability and elegance.

We invite you to make an appointment to visit our large Dorset showroom. Here you can view our unrivalled selection of fine antique clocks in person. 2. Fully Serviced & Guaranteed
Once you have selected the clock you wish to purchase, you can secure it by placing a 20% deposit. The clock will then be taken to our workshop, where a specialist clockmaker will conduct a comprehensive restoration. The clock will then undergo rigorous testing for a minimum of 4 weeks. The work carried out on your clock will be guaranteed for 3 years, providing you with further peace of mind.
3. Delivery
After the clock has undergone a full restoration and the testing period has been successfully completed, we will contact you to arrange a suitable date for delivery. At this point the final balance will be due. The delivery process will be coordinated with you to ensure a convenient and secure transportation of the clock to your location.
