  • French Automata Lighthouse Clock A wonderful 19th-century novelty clock by Andre Romain Guilmet of Paris, who was famous for producing various industrial-themed mantel clocks. 8-day timepiece movement that is wound through the opening bezel, which also facilitates hand adjustment. Silvered dial with painted Roman numerals, and original matching blued steel hands. At the base of the lighthouse, there is a second movement that drives the rotating top of the lighthouse for a few hours, revealing an aneroid barometer with a similar silvered dial that opposes the clock. To the sides of the drum are two thermometers, one reading Fahrenheit and the other Centigrade, both with silvered register plates. The case is of all-brass construction sitting on a black slate base. These clocks appear on the market with different surface finishes, some gilded, silver-plated, silvered, and some of natural brass. This example shows no evidence of ever being gilded or silver plated, and so the case has been lightly polished and then lacquered to protect from fingerprints. The drum has been silvered, which is in keeping with traces of the original silvering. C.1885 Height: 17” 43.5cm £ 9,500

  • French Red Marble Mantel Clock A standard French 8-day movement that strikes the hours and half hours on a bell, via a count-wheel. Brocot in the dial above the 12 o’clock position allows the fine regulation of the pendulum. The movement stamped GE.V on the backplate. White enamel 4.5” dial with Roman numerals and Arabic minutes on just the quarters. Matching, finely pierced, gilded brass hands. The case is of red marble, profusely decorated with ormolu swags, cock-beading and a finely cast bezel. C.1850 Height: 14½” or 36cm £ 2,950
